Allen hid amongst the many spectators who had gathered to watch a show being presented. On the stage was a gypsy woman who danced to the small band of other gypsies. Allen wasn’t there to watch the performers however. As the crowd was distracted by the show Allen started pickpocketing the watchers. Allen collected money pouches, wallets, pocket watches, rings and on occasion stealing items from market baskets. You could say he was a pro at it after doing it for most of his life while living with the caravan. “Thank you for watching ladies and gentlemen we hope to see you again.” The performer and leader said bowing to the leaving crowd. Allen walked around to the back of the tent carrying a sack on his back acting like a market worker. Check that no one was around he entered the tent to find all of the performers and leader there. “Ah there you are Allen how did your part turn out while mulling through the crowd?” The leader asked. “I think pretty well since we had a big crowd here.” Allen said dropping a large sack and opening it to show it almost full. “Wonderful job my boy your mother would be proud of you if she was still with us.” The woman performer said patting the boy’s back. We will have a great dinner to celebrate your collection today! Now time to pack up!” their leader cheered.

After packing the group headed back to where their camp was set up. Walking past other people they heard comments of a pale fox that would bring children to the forest and they would disappear not to be seen again. “Is it true sir, the stories about that fox?” Allen asked the caravan leader as they arrived back at the camp. “Ah my boy you have heard about the pale fox?”  The oldest member camp asked. “El-elder I’m sorry, I don’t mean to pry. But is this fox dangerous miss?” Allen asked wondering about the creature. “Foxes are good luck my child, they show wisdom, strategy and quick thinking. Here I want you to have this.” The old woman said rubbing his hair and entering her cart to come a few minutes later. “It’s a gift I was going to give it to in a few more years but deserve it.” The old woman said putting a necklace on the boy. Looking at it he saw the charm was in the shape of an owl. “You’re a smart boy Allen. You shouldn’t live her all your life. Follow the fox if you see it; the creature will lead you on your correct path. But be careful my boy remember everything you have been taught.” The woman said hugging him. “Thank you elder I will remember, and if I don’t come back I’m sorry.” Allen said hugging her back. “It is alright my time is almost here.” She said smiling.

The next day after everyone partied and celebrated yesterday’s success the camp decided to go hunting before they left for a new site. “Allen you stay here and watch the fire while we go collect food before we head off.” One of the members told him as they left. Allen left disappointed at what they told him took out his knife and started digging the blade into the dirt. Looking up he saw the pale fox he had heard about looking right at him from across the fire pit. Surprised and remembering what the elder told him Allen rushed in to the cart grabbed his bag, packed some food, his knife, a book and put his new charm necklace around his neck and followed the strange fox. “Elder please be right about this.” Allen told himself as he followed the fox into the forest. As they went deeper the light faded and so did the fox’s form until it disappeared. Allen bravely trudged on even though it started to seem like the branches were. Sadly as time passed he became more and more lost. Giving up Allen sat down and waited for whatever came his way next.

(What will happen to our small friend now that he is lost? Stay tuned next time same time same bat channel!)
